Message to Members: Bringing the Whole WSA Website to You... and Browsers 101: Help with Login Problems...

Dear Members:                                                                                                                        updated November 4 2011

The WSA Board of Directors is keen to bring the whole experience of our website to  the attention of free Forum members and Supporting (paid) Members alike.  While free members can see some parts of the website and participate in the Forum, Supporting members can participate in the Forum and now can read many more stories, back issues of Mainstay our quarterly newsletter,  excerpts from our founder Maggie Strong's book, Mainstay, and much more.

More often than ever, the combination of more complicated browser upgrades and websites with more complex html coding are causing problems for users -- who would just like to be able to go to the site and see everything on it, in the way they always did before! What follows is a summary, by browser of how to deal with these problems...

One very simple "fix, " if your favorite browser has upgraded and now you are having problems is to upload the next previous version -- the one that worked, and stick with that for a while longer.

If you are having login problems, read on for instructions on how to change your password, and clear your cookies and temporary Internet files.

As of early August, 2011, it seems that Safari's new update, version 5.0.6 is causing problems in gaining access to our website.

Logging in and out:

From now on please log in and out from the website, and click on the Forums button to get there.
When you leave the site, if you are in the Forum, you will first need to log out from the Forum, then log out from the Website. This ensures that your Forum session is not left open for anyone with access to your computer to look at.

Changing your password:

If you need to change your password or add other details, do it on the home page, http://wellspouse.org . Go to My Profile, under Member Menu on the top of the left-hand sidebar. There you will see all your information -- and this information is never shown to anyone else, except the Admin.  Note that it will say "Password is too short". This is because the box  is empty, waiting for you to type a new password in; then verify it in the next box down.  Your password is never shown - either to you or to anyone else, including the SiteAdmin. The password needs to be long enough and with a number or character like @ so that you get a "green light" OK in the box before you verify it.

Saving My Profile Changes [required fields]:

In order to save any changes, you must first make sure all starred (asterisked) boxes -- the required fields - are completed. Then click on Save at the bottom of your account to preserve all changes.

Forgot password:

If you forget your password, you will need to send a message to  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to get a new, temporary one, to allow you to log in.  Then please change that to a password known only to you, and which you will remember.

If you cannot Log in:

The simplest reason may be that you have a prior password automatically saved by your browser, that no longer works. To avoid that, type in your present password.

For all the different fixes below, it is important to close your browser, and best to shut down and restart your computer, in order for them to work.

Deleting Cookies and Internet Temp Files:

If you cannot login, it may be because your cookies and temp files are still set up to look for older login  information and procedures, causing an error message.  To resolve the problems, follow these step by step instructions first:

For Internet Explorer 9:

Since IE9 is so new and issues/problems are not yet known, if possible, at this time please avoid installing it, and continue using your older browser.  Where I work, the computing department has discouraged us from  installing IE9.

However, if you have already installed it, there may be some issues with parts of the web pages not showing up properly... if you encounter this, the first thing to try is to clear the cookies and the Internet temp files (see procedure below, for IE8).  If it still doesn't work, make sure you are logged out of the Forum and the webpage, then repeat that exercise, close the browser, restart your computer, and try again.  Finally, setting your IE browser to compatibility view ON, (via the Tools dropdown menu) may help resolve a problem.

In IE9 as in IE8 and IE7 before it,  there may be problems with pages not loading properly. Web developers have most of their problems with IE.  Firefox is better, or Safari. They seem to work fine.

Instructions to delete Cookies and temp Internet files from  Internet Explorer 7 and 8 (and IE9):

 1. On IE7 go to Tools, Internet Options, (puts you on the General tab)
2. Look for Browsing History and Click Delete
3a. For IE7 on the resulting window, click on the first two bars, to Delete Temporary Internet Files, and Delete Cookies
3b. Click Close at the bottom of this submenu (IE7)
4a. For IE9 Internet Options is found via the Tools icon -- the geared wheel on the upper right toolbar near the top.
4b. For IE8, leave these two lines on the General tab checked, and consider also checking the Preserve Favorites line (which will remove pointers to a web address that is no longer operable)
4c. then click Delete at the bottom. Proceed to step 5.
5. Click OK at the bottom of this tab (General)
6. Logout completely from the Forum and a second time, from the Website (http://wellspouse.org)
7. Close the window.
8. Then open a new window for the website and try again to go to the Forum...

If it still doesn't work, repeat steps 1-7 and close the browser altogether, then restart your computer

Finally, setting your IE browser to compatibility view ON, (via the Tools dropdown menu) may help resolve a problem.
