Travel Topic

We seem to be having a wave of travel among WS! :D :D :D

I find all the recent travel reports, with and without an IS, inspiring, encouraging, and motivating. Sometimes these are posted in "Help and Healing", like when the IS is traveling with the WS; and sometimes they are posted in "WS are People Too" when the WS travels alone. There have also been discusions about how to leave an IS at home "alone" when the WS travels for pleasure or business.

I would love to see a new thread topic on this subject that would make it easier to look back and read what others have done when I'm considering a trip. There are a lot of things we can't do but reading what others have done and how just might convince someone to take the plunge and reap the rewards of getting out of a rut.

Just my two cents.

Here is my two cents worth: IS won't let anyone stay overnight. He can still transfer himself from bed to powerchair to toilet. I have phones in every location he might fall including on his powerchair, in the bathroom, at his lift recliner, etc. The necessary numbers are programmed. He's had to use this plan before so I know it works!

Then I hire someone who comes in three times a day. They get his meals and sit and visit. He calls them the hired babysitter. I have a key hidden outside and they know, as well as all my employees, where this is in the event IS falls and cannot get to the door. The "babysitter" has keys, garage door opener, clear pages of instructions and lastly, lots of money.

The biggest drawback is that IS will not allow anyone else to help with his shower so I can stay two nights away. I'll be gone three nights for the conference. I guess he'll just stink when I get home.

I've checked at our local assisted living place and they have rooms for rent for respite time. With IS's condition worsening that will be the next plan.

There are microwavable bath wipes for washing those who can't shower.

I didn't know that, Dorothy! Thanks for the tip. I will get some for ISAA to use between showers.

About this thread, maybe I didn't use the right words. What I meant was a chapter or whatever they are called on the Board Index - like WS are People too, Help and Healing, Parenting, etc. Could we have one called Travel?

These (I forget the brand name) are usually expensive but believe it or not my 99C store has them - they sell out quickly but they keep getting them so I stock up. These can be $5 + ? normally - they are the same if not better than the expensive ones - same number of cloths to do whole body bath.

There's a relatively easy way to find topics on "travel" -- or any other keyword.
Use the Search feature -- at the top of this screen -- and put in your keyword, and then click the radio button below on the right, for "Within a topic".

The default of Search looks everywhere for the keyword, which picks up a lot of not very relevant hits. Be sure to narrow it down to topics only, and you'll find lots of posts with travel tips.
