Indenting a paragraph

Postby rebel » Tue Jan 16, 2007 10:55 am

Can someone tell me how to indent on mew paragraphs? My posts usually come out without the indents. If I double space, I get a break between sentences, but have not been able to indent a new paragraph. (I'm sure it's something simple...I just haven't figured out what it is.) Thanks.....rebel

You mean in your posts here? There is no paragraph formatting here like there is in a word processing program. Even if you write your post in Word with specific formatting and then copy/paste here, styles are left behind since this is pretty much an ASCII-based text editor.

Pop quiz - without looking it up, what does ASCII stand for?
Hint - It is not "ASC-Roman Numeral 2."

Making paragraphs

Hi Rebel:

Just use a double space to indicate a paragraph! That will also give some visual variety to your post.

We don't care about such niceities as indented paragraphs! At least I don't. ;)

Leading spaces are ignored by this software, as are double spaces.

Robert and Silver Swan...thanks for your responses....I was sure I have seen indents and double spaces before. Maybe I've been hallucinating....

And No I have no idea what ASCII means....maybe it's a basic program....? Anyway, thanks.....rebel

ASCII = American Standard Code for Information Interchange

This is sometimes used in the teletypewriter for the deaf (TDD or TTY).

Making paragraphs

Postby Silver Swan » Wed Jan 17, 2007 7:39 am

Dear Robert:

Probably should have written "double lines" instead of double spaces. What I mean is that I press Enter twice to make a paragraph. Tallk about poor communication or wrong choice of words or something. Duh.

and, Silver Swan, I guess that's what I meant, also, when I stated I thought I had seen that done. Duh for me, too. Hey, teak, you win the prize!
Thanks....rebel

This is the striped down plain ol' alphanumeric format that all common computers and most bulletin boards use. You can write it with a Commodore or Mac and read it with an Amiga or PC.

Even spell check won't fix improper word usage. :(

spelling

Postby Silver Swan » Wed Jan 17, 2007 7:45 pm

Hey, that's OK, Bob! I knew what you meant.

Our eyes have a way of filling in missing letters and reading what was meant to be typed.

Better not let this happen again though. The spelling watch bird is watching you.

Rebel [Posted: Tue Jan 16, 2007 10:55 am] wrote:Can someone tell me how to indent on new paragraphs?

My question goes to indenting an entire paragraph of text.

I am not querying as to the use of the Enter-key:
a) to create a shorter-than-otherwise line; or
b) to insert one or more lines between paragraphs.

I am not asking about a message initially prepared by using WORD (or any other word processor).

My question goes to typing a message directly into a "Post a reply" form.

I have noted [in the posting by OldnTired (posted [in this thread] Tue Jan 16, 2007 7:43 pm)]:
"Leading spaces are ignored by this software . . . ."

I have concluded, from reading the postings in this thread, that it is not possible to indent entire paragraphs (or, stated otherwise, achieve the result one would expect to obtain (when using a word processing program) by: inserting a paragraph-break at the end of each line in a 5-line paragraph; and, then inserting leading spaces (say, 10 leading spaces) at the beginning of each of the 5 lines of the paragraph).

Question: Am I correct in this conclusion?

Thanks!

In a word, yes!! (I put in 5 spaces, but they'll get knocked out)

     I did make an indent this way, however!
