Nora - I think the b.i. means brain injury. Not sure about the 'a' though...

The "A" in ABI stands for acquired.
TBI is traumatic brain injury.

For a distinction between the two, you'd probably be better off googling than listening to my definition. :)

My IS has ABI "Acquired Brain Injury" as a result of damaged done from a Pituitary tumor, subsequent radiation & lack of O2 from sleep apnea & respitory failure while in the hospital for an artery rupture. ABI is the gradual damage as opposed to sudden as in an accident. I only recent found out the difference on a Brain Injury website.

Actually acquired brain injury can be sudden too as in my IS who had a cardiac arrest so got no oxygen to his brain for a few minutes, but that is all it took for the injury to occur. I think the difference between ABI and TBI is lack of physical trauma in the former so things like stroke and cardiac arrest fall into the acquired category while car accidents and falls would be traumatic. Actually here in Australia the traumatic tag is not used at all and they are all referred to as acquired, because the person was not born with the injury but acquired it sometime after.

Interesting sometimes I just use BI for Brain Injury then we do not have to worry about when or how it happened it just happened.

Acronyms

Postby Silver Swan » Sun Apr 02, 2006 10:04 pm

:?: Has anyone mentioned HOH? (hard of hearing). It may be that I am more familiar with this since my husband is almost 84 and I heard this acronym at the health care center. The staff have lots of acronyms and I find myself frequently asking for translations.

Erin,
Just wondered if this was an ongoing thread, and if a complete list of acronyms ever got put together?

CHF- Congestive Heart Failure
TIA- Transient Ischemic Attack (Mini Strokes)
CP- Cerebral Palsy
FIBRO- for Fibromyalgia

I remember when the only acronyms I had to worry about were IRS and the DMV (Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Motor Vehicles). I think I am becoming AP- Acronym Phobic since becoming a WS.
