Telephone Support Groups PDF Print E-mail
Current Well Spouses -- Fourth Saturday           Mobile Phone

Current Well Spouses live a life of uncertainty with their ill partner, as the "elephant in the room" -- the illness -- can be very unforgiving and can intrude upon their spousal relationship at any time.

Those who live in an area where there is no active WSA face-to-face support group can receive and give support through the printed word -- the WSA website with its stories and information; the WSA Online Forum; and a chatline for members. We can now offer another alternative -- a telephone connection with their peers, that they can take advantage of once a month...

All WSA Support Group participation requires Supporting Membership status but no one is turned away for lack of funds.

Former Well Spouses --- First Friday

Former Well Spouses
, even at different stages of the grieving process, have much in common.  Often, our journey includes the "normal" grieving process as well as healing from the pressures of our caregiving experience. Formers are not only those whose spouse has passed away, but also those who are less involved in the day-to-day, minute-to-minute care of a spouse, because they are separated, divorced or their partner is in a nursing home or other institution.

Please join us to discuss any aspects of this difficult process.

First Friday Formers: meeting by phone on the first Friday of each month at 9 pm Eastern Time (6 pm Pacific Time) -- for those whose spouse or partner is deceased.

Everyone mourns the loss of a life partner in a different way, and those whose partner had a chronic illness and/or continuing disability are not exempt from this. Even as a current well spouse, one cannot imagine how it is going to feel after one's partner dies.

Also, Well Spouses don't stop being a spousal caregiver and caring for their Ill Spouse just because they are living apart, whether through separation or divorce, or because they have had to put their spouse in a nursing home. And with their continuing care from a distance, they find there still is a lot of concern for their IS and emotional stress resulting from the ups and downs of the caring situation.

First Friday Formers is a  telephone support group in which members can share their concerns about the effects of the "new normal" in their lives.

One member recently said: "I hadn't considered myself a 'former' in a real sense until I was reading about the phone support groups on the WellSpouse website.  Since he's been out of the house, I have been describing myself to myself as 'half a widow', so when I saw the description on the website, it really clicked for me."
